Hot off the press! Arnaud Barbe, who runs the Sirona Records netlabel, just unleashed his 300th release, Sincerity Is The Key: a virtual box set of containing over 7 CDs...9 hours of free music.

Exclusive tracks from familiar names like c4, as well as recent HP additions Origami Repetika and Jared C. Balogh. Lee contributed a previously-unreleased turntable piece called "The Screaming Tunnel". Way to go Arnaud, but 9 hours?!

New release: Music inspired by the writings of Isaac Asimov

In possibly his most nerdy move yet, Lee Rosevere's latest project is music inspired by the writing of Isaac Asimov, known for his many science-fiction stories.

Each composition is named after the corresponding sci-fi short story (sorry you'll have to visit your library or download a complete collection of short stories to read the originals, copyright infringement and all that).

Similar in style to the three installments of the Light Years albums (I, II and III), the music is reminiscent of unofficial scores for non-existent sci-fi movies. It isn't essential to be familiar with the Asimov stories the songs are named after, but it does enhance the listening experience. Lee's comments on each track are available in the liner notes below.

Things are jumping already, as we've got a number of releases ready to go... first up, a new artist to the roster Jared C. Balogh, and his experiemental modern-classical release Rhythms Of Life, similar in style to the Synclavier work of Zappa. Free download!

And Lee has joined up with the new Disquiet/Junto audio group, started by Marc who runs the influential Disquiet website. The first 'assignment' for the group was to record the sound of ice in a glass and make something out of it... we recommend checking out all the interesting results, but this is what Lee came up with:

We have some new music to come in 2012 already (wait for everything to slow down again), but right now here are a couple of very cool videos that use some of Lee's music from the Vimeo music store... and oddly enough, all three of them feature time-lapse photograph and all three feature music from The Ambient Baby! Perhaps we should start a new genre of music... slo-mo?

new single: Origami Repetika

This is a debut release on Happy Puppy from Adam Sigmund, aka Origami Repetika, aka Agent 220 of Origami Republika (universal network of people who are interested in sharing expressions).

Origami Repetika has a number of releases on our close friends Adam Crammond's proc-records.net label, as well as the infamous 20kpbs and abulia concepts.

"These are two tracks I recently finished before taking a break for the rest of 2011 as my new wife and I are getting a place of our own right after christmas... I had a good time adding ambientish subtleties on top of my repetitive drums and bass."

The first track "one two 3 4" starts off as sounding like an experimental mic-in-track, the processed vocal textures and sweeping synths bounce all around your head; the b-side "love love what can you say love" is like a lost 80s remix (recommended if you're familiar with The Legends Facts and Figures album). It's a groovy little single and we hope you enjoy it.

Trick or Treat!

A stormy night pushes you to toward a huge and dark house belonging to the reclusive Dr. Slocum, a mysterious genius who converted a closed asylum into an evil labratory, where he hides from the world with his menage of monsters of science. But the ghosts that haunted the asylum are still there...

Once inside you hear ghostly pianos with no-one playing them, strange moans and cries of terror, floating spirits, dark and empty operating chambers, and more than one dungeon inhabited by abandoned 'experiments'...

You always see those "Sounds of Horror" CDs for sale in the shops during Halloween, and most of the time they are of the 'overdoing-it' variety in design. They are always more comical or cartoony, than actually scary.

So Lee Rosevere designed this nearly 45 minute spooky-suite of truly unsettling and disturbing sounds, free to use for all your Halloween purposes.

Listening on headphones will prove the most rewarding (and creepy) experience, but it's also great for putting in the front window of your house to add eerie ambience during the trick-or-treating hours.

It is intended for non-commercial personal use. If you are holding a charity event and would like to use it, please be our guest.

new single: Morgan Sadler "Go On"

Happy Puppy is proud to present a single release by Canadian singer/songwriter Morgan Sadler.

She describes her musical creations as beautiful disasters with thoughtful, yet sometimes obscure lyrics, sung with sincere emotion.

Morgan has been performing and writing for years, getting her start at The Merchant, in Kingston ONT.

Since then, she formed a trio and released her first EP called Turn, one of the tracks featured here "Go On" won a Toronto Independent Music Award for Best Song 2009-2010.

New release: The Classicality of /'Zəeppə/

Recently, I came across this commercial release and wondered if it would be possible to create a version using only tracks available for free download online (Creative Commons licensed tracks) since many of the original composers are no longer with us.

Turns out, it is possible!

Thanks to a variety of online classical search engines (and the gracious permission of all the ensembles and artists for allowing redistribution), I am very proud to present this collection, which I will refer to as The Classicality of /'Zəeppə/ (just to keep the lawyers happy).

The track lists are not completely identical, as the tracks here were chosen strictly by availability, quality of recording and performance. However, all of the composers and/or compositions were influential.

Even if you're not a fan of Mr. /'Zəeppə/, you can still download and enjoy this music for own its own merits.

Please visit the original artists sites and donate whatever you can for their generosity, and continued effort to keep the music alive.

New release: LR's "The Devil is a Captcha"

Captcha's were already annoying, and lately they've gotten worse. The jumbled letters are so masked on website that they can be barely read, let alone retyped.

On a recent account signup, Google asked me to type something illegible. So I hit the "play" button so I could understand it. What I heard was even more disturbing (google "captcha" on youtube, others have discovered it too).

A mix of backwards and garbled voices with an anonymous robot reads random words at disjointed intervals. It sounds like digital ghosts have attacked your computer, much like those awful Hollywood EVP movies.

I was startled at first, then intriqued. What were the backwards voices saying? Not to mention the dadaist minimalist poetry that the robot spurted out.

So I downloaded the handy-dandy mp3 provided and make a collage of voices - the left channel features the forward robot with backward voices, and the right channel is backwards robot, with forward voices (which sound like they come from TV interviews)... for eleven minutes and 6 seconds (666 seconds).

The netlabel Sirona Records, run by Arnaud Barbe aka Pollux (who just released an single on Happy Puppy) has only been in operating for a few months, but it already has over 125+ releases.

Recently they put out album #101 featuring 3 discs worth of lo-bitrate exclusive material from many artists, including Lee who donated a new track which you can download for free.

Hello friends... Lee R. here, looking to see if there is anyone out there who might know or be able to contact a Mr. Greg R. Roth, who once recorded under the band name The Mizalites from Winnipeg.

I have a cassette of this band that I would like to reissue on Happy Puppy (for free download of course), but I have no contact info for Greg. I found this tape in Winnipeg, at a Sam The Record Man (remember them?) around 1995/96. The date on the tape is 1993, Castle 1 Band Records.. it looks like this:

I've googled and googled, and even contacted the public library in Winnipeg for contact info, but they have nothing.

If you're reading this Greg R. Roth (or you are someone who knows him) please send me an email!

Even if you don't want Happy Puppy to re-release it, please email me anyway as I know there is a CD version of this music and I'd like to upgrade my tape - and I'd love to see the video for "Jet ride" (apparently it was on a DVD with the CD version).

Some of Lee's ambient tracks have been added to the playlist for the You Are Listening To... website - this is a neat site that plays random tracks via soundcloud and juxtaposes them with streaming audio from police radio scanners. You can choose difference cities like Chicago, LA, Montreal and our thanks to Eric, who runs the site for adding us.

Graffiti Mechanism returns to the label with a brand new release - Fueled By Emotion - consisting of spacy, electronic ambient sounds - this time with more dark textures.

Happy Puppy is very proud to release the first volume in the series King For A Day: a fan tribute to XTC! Originally these cover tunes were released on cassette in the mid-90s, and the first volume concentrates on the first tape from 1996. Also, you don't have to wait and purchase all 134 covers at once on a CD-R for really cheap!

Hellooo... two new things to tell you aboot:

Happy Puppy is proud to announce a new group to the roster: Scarm.

This Russian-based group dropped this album on us out of the blue, and it's quite interesting.

A curious blend of atmospheric guitars and drums with a experimental and improvisational edge, emotional, darkly melodic noise ambient. This could easily appear on a soundtrack to an underground indie film, but also stands completely on its own. The band describe it as "a storyline about one uncommon day of an ordinary person. It starts at the midday and ends late at night. And the darker street comes the more heavy, terrible and noisy music turns."

I first discovered the music of Reggie Regan in 1990 while sifting through a box of 45s at my local Winnipeg University radio station - CDs were just becoming more common, and the station manager wanted to make room, so he said I could take whatever 45s I wanted. Wrong thing to say to me.

While digging through the milkcrates of neglected vinyl, I found this indie release entitled Reggie Regan's Greatest Hits Volume 1 (yes, he did it before the Rheostatics). I was intrigued, especially when one of the songs was "Burning Swedish Meatballs".

I listened to it at home and I was taken by it's quirky charm, a blend of new wave and slighty off-kilter pop. Who was this guy? No info available on the label, other than it was released in 1984. I looked him up in 1997 when I got online but there was nothing.

Fast-forward to early 2011, and going through some of my vinyl that I was transferring to CD I wanted to upgrade my copy and thought to look his name up online again.

This time, I discover a lot more about Reggie, mostly through his friends blog: Reggie lived in Winnipeg for a time doing the odd gig and released this one and only record (now a hit in cult circles).

He also knows how to fix transmissions, fixes up spare houses, he's an emergency flight-crew nurse, he's a medical legal consultant, and he spends alot of his time building bat houses in efforts to control mosquito populations - one of the unknown heroes from Canada (ok technically he's been in the States for a long time too).

And now with Reggie's kind permission, he is going to take over the interweb by re-releasing his only-ever record available for free download on Happy Puppy. He also generously donated a scan of the original vinyl sleeve art (mine didn't have one) so you can get the full Reggie experience. Click here to get it!

Plumtree ROCKS!

Happy Puppy is proud to announce the re-release of a long out-of-print and rare debut EP by Canadian band Plumtree.

Plumtree were originally out of Halifax, made a big impression early on and that continues today, ten years after they broke up, thanks to starting that whole Scott Pilgrim thing.

They released one cassette EP, three albums and a handful of singles in their 6 year lifespan, making a mark on the Canadian indie scene with their smart, spunky and fun rock music. And Plumtree did rock.

I never felt that the band truly got the attention and respect they deserve: they were one of the best groups to come out of Canada and I'm extremely happy that the band have given me permission to make their debut EP from 1994 Flutterboard available on Happy Puppy for free download (for a limited time!).

These tracks are from their cassette master. Original cassette artwork is also included (complete with creases) and if you like what you hear, please visit their site where you can purchase their new 'best of' collection, Carla and Lynettes new SISTER project and other assorted Plumtree goodness, or consider a donation for their generosity.

Where to begin... ok, here's everything we've been up to since the last post:

Lee's track "The Unwelcome Idea" was submitted over 2 years ago to Dharmasound for an upcoming comp. They changed their name to Dsound and now you too can download We Want To Beehivemind.

In light of yet another economic disaster, Lee released a new single: Red Danube available for free download.

Indaba Music started a remix contest for Steve Reich.. and you can listen to Lee's submission here.

Hallowe'en is over, but you can always download The Itchy Creeps virtual 7" and keep it handy for next year.

New artist to the HP roster Pushing Task releases his 28-minute noise album Barbershop. It actually sounds more a dentist drill cutting squeaky dolls in half. You have been warned.

The downloadable version of Fluxwax is now on sale for $3.99 at both Bandcamp and CDbaby! Half the price until Christmas...

And Test Tube has released the other album Lee made in February, The Vela Companion (light years book ii) is out now with a very nice writeup from Pedro.

Lee's also created a new album consisting of two long tracks called Nacre; all proceeds from the sale of this album will be donated to the Canadian Red Cross for Pakistan relief. Plus if you buy it now, the Canadian Gov't is matching all Pakistan donations dollar for dollar... we've set the price of $2 minimum, but you can pay more if you like because we won't keep a penny.

What the heck is going on!?

The song is also the theme to the ABC Life Literacy Podcast, and has been showing up in various youtube videos. Does this mean we're trending?

Hullo June... here's the latest release:

It's Comsopolitan Time! with the Cosmopolitans.

The Cosmopolitans were legendary on the Winnipeg public access scene for over 20 years. The musical duo of Marion Clemens and Louise Wynberg had the longest running show on VPW Channel 11 in Winnipeg, where once a week they would play their favourite songs (mostly from Louise's memory) sometimes in the studio and sometimes on location with Marion on drums and Louise on keyboards and vocals.

This album is comprised of two audio cassettes I made of the show, circa 1995 - the first recorded at VPW Studios in Winnipeg and the second at the Kin Place Personal Care Home in Oakbank, MB where Marion now resides.

Unfortunately, VPW's scheduling wasn't always consistant - being the nature of public access, sometimes programs would be substituted with no notice. Unfortunately, both times I caught these programs I missed the first few minutes.

However, there is so little documentation of The Cosmopolitans work, any tapes are rare. They do appear in the DVD collection of VPW shows "Winnipeg Babysitter", but the DVD is now out of print (if you email Video Pool Winnipeg and bug them, they might make more!)

Louise sadly passed away in 2002, but Marion is 83 and has started documenting her life as an immigrant to Canada in her books and she graciously gave me permission to share the Cosompolitans music with you all and I dedicate it to the memory of Louise.

I'm also discontinuing the blog for now, since all this is a repeat of the news on the website and I'm a little tired of posting stuff twice and reformatting, blah blah.

So there will be no more updates here, and for the moment I'm not planning to delete it, but we'll see. All the old geocities links don't work and I'm too lazy to fix them. Just go the new website and all will be good.

April release - An introduction to Logan Whitehurst and the Jr. Science Club

I first became a fan of Logan's music back in 2000, during the 'golden age' of mp3.com. I contacted him and we exchanged a few brief emails and I bought a bunch of CDs from him. His "Goodbye My 4-track" album was a Top 10 albums of 2003 for me.

Fast forward to 2004, and Logan is diagnosed with a brain tumor. He fought it with all the strength he had, but sadly the tumor didn't go away and Logan passed away as a result of it in December 2006 at the unfair young age of 29.

Logan's music was fun, thought-provoking, catchy and he had a fantastic gift for melody. With the permission of his family, Happy Puppy Records is proud to release "An Introduction to..", a personal mix of some of our favorite tracks from his downloadable catalog.

If you like what you hear, I would strongly recommend buying any of his albums from his official store, or download all of the albums he made available on mp3.com plus lots more here at the Jr. Science Club Archive.

Italian artist Paolo Berti's Bessemerr project has just released their debut release on our label. It's a fantastic work of electronic and electro-acoustic music called Fields and it's one you should definitely download!

Lee was recently asked to do an interview and create a online mix for the audioblog Audiopleasures, run by Tiago Martins and his collegues. It's a regular feature on the blog called mY Indie Soul and you can read it and listen to the mix here. Thanks to Audiopleasures for the great opportunity.

Well, it might appear that things are a little quiet right now, but that's because we've been working on some new projects, some that I can tell you about - others will have to wait.

One thing for sure is Fudge is appearing on the new surf compilation CD by Cordelia Records called Further Beyond The Sea, covering Donna Lewis's "I Love You (always forever)"! The CD is at the pressing plant now and we should have copies soon.

Also, a favorite pop singer/songwriter of ours from the ol' mp3.com days Jason Kaneshiro is putting together a 10-track Greatest Hits/Retrospective of his music for us that will be available soon for free download.

Plus Lee Rosevere created an album for the Kazoomzoom label, but their site is being redesigned, so we can't tell you about it. Shhhhh....more news soon.

Happy fall everyone!

We start off the new season with a brand new EP from Graffiti Mechanism entitled Harvest Moon. It's perfect blend of organic textures and electronic warmth - perfect music to go for a walk in the pumpkin patch with, and as always it's available for free download!

Lee is once again slated to appear on a tribute to Frank Zappa in the new year, only this time under his real name. 21 Burnt Weenie Sandwiches challenges various artists from around the world to use all or partial themes of Zappa's Burnt Weeny Sandwich album into a single song. Lee's track "Burning Of The Sand Witch" got the thumbs up and we can't wait to hear the rest of the album when it gets released by Cordelia Records next year.

c4 returns with another EP of spacey electronic loops and grooves. Very much in the style of Jean Michel-Jarre and spacey-masters The Orb, these four tracks show Adam's melodic side, but still retain the hypnotic quality from his other work. By using no percussion or drums, the music has a floating quality, with movement propelled by the rhythm of the melodies.

In collaboration with the Oceanbase netlabel, Lee has released two versions of new ambient material.

Over at Oceanbase, you can download Four Reasons, a collection of 4 long tracks for completely free licensed to the public domain.

Here at Happy Puppy, we are offering an limited exclusive "artist edition" of the album, entitled Reason which contains over 4 hours of music, including extended full length versions of the material on a 4-CD box set...over 3 hours of unheard music!

The 4-CD version of Reason is not for free download - it's being released as a fund raiser for archive.org, which hosts all of our music for absolutely no charge, so we'd thought it'd be nice to give something back to them.

KUSO - Sursu & Tabriz [hpr025]

Happy Puppy is pleased to announce the debut EP from the latest addition to the Puppy label family.

Although the word "Kuso" means internet culture parody in East Asia, these tracks by the enigmatic artist Kuso suggest intent in a more serious musical direction.

This EP is split into 2 distinct parts, the first titled "TABRIZ" which encorporates elements of Japanese-flavoured guitars alongside orchestrations and melodies that resemble the 1970's work of Ennio Morricone.

The second shorter section, "SURSU" is comprised of themes that could easily appear in an action picture from the 70s, although of the slightly more wobbly variety.

The bonus track "Construccion Del Maiz" is an 8-bit outing, very much like the theme from a long-lost video game.

Happy Puppy Records is unleashing its inner guitar rock god with the EP release of Shreds, Volume 1!

Inspired by the shredding videos posted by St. Sanders, Happy Puppy put out the call for shreds and boy, did we get some! Five artistes plus the infamous St. Sanders himself contribute highly unique and entertaining shreddings.

Everything from shredded kazoos, hoovers, electronica to good ol' electric guitars turned up to 11 are here in all their wanky glory. Nigel Tufnel would be proud.

c4 - deeply present moment [hpr023]

'deeply present moment' was a very difficult album for me to produce. It relied very heavily upon the utilization of various outside sound sources (i.e. shortwave radio, record player, micro-cassette deck, etc) as opposed to my usual, very software driven production style and were also only recorded in a single attempt (thus, the title "deeply present moment"). These sounds were then ran through my mixer and recorded straight to mp3 at 256 kbps.

Again, Each attempt at a track was done only once. My goal was to record sound in the present moment and create tracks that were only available at that place and time.

completely abandoning rythem (except for inertia and tega), this release focuses more upon cold spacious landscapes, droning melodies and glitchy static to fill in the fleeting gaps of silence." - c4

March update: Lee Rosevere - "Ghost Words" new release

Ghost Words is Lee Rosevere's first solo piano improvisational release, digitally recorded live with no overdubs or edits.

These compositions do not follow traditional song structure. Much like a layered painting, emotion is the guiding force behind invention: melodies hide inside one another, and moods and textures change frequently.

Lee's musical influences include Zappa's instrumental work, Michael Snow, Steve Reich, and John Cage.

December update: Lee Rosevere - Daigao

Lee makes his debut on the enough records netlabel, with an extremely long ambient piece, "Daigao".

Orchestral sounds move in and out so slowly and subtley, you're barely aware they're there. As with most of Lee's ambient work, you can leave it in the background and let it lull you to sleep, or study it to discover its deeper layers.

"Daigao" made it's public debut at the Contemporary Art Gallery in November 2007, and is being released for free download by enough records, run by Filipe in Portugal. Artwork by Pedro Sa.

November update: RADIESMAN!

Radiesman is one of the true infamous icons of the mp3.com generation of artists. He appeared on the website back in 2000, with no explanation or reason. His tortured love ballads, crooned with an ache that cannot be understated, were beyond description. And as soon as he appeared, he vanished.

Happy Puppy Records is proud to announce the re-release of Radiesman only-known recordings entitled "Best Friends On The Beach". Up until now, the only official release of his music appeared on "The Poop Alley Tapes" compilation, curated by the Poop Alley Studios owner, Tom Grimley.

Since that compilation has gone out of print, Radiesman music is extremely rare. Tom has graciously given Happy Puppy his consent to the re-releasing of this album, and we hope you enjoy listening to a little bit of internet history, brought to life again.

November update: Lee Rosevere - Emblem

Proc-records, run by c4 (Adam Crammond), has released a new album of ambient works by Lee. All titles were named after colours, in particular the kind of colours that Lee visualized while creating the music. The sequence was chosen by the artwork, which is in the same order of colours, starting with black at the top and going through a spectrum of primary colors, until black appears again at the end.

As Adam reviewed it: "While it is possible to just let this release play in the background, it demands full attention and shouldnt be treated as just another ambient soundtrack! The mellow textures of droning melodies complimenting one another as they dimminish and return seem to create a breathtaking collidescope of sound." Wow! Thanks Adam!

November update: NEWS - Calling for Shreds

This is a call for submissions for a compilation album called "Shreds". Basically, it's going to be a collection of pretentious wanky guitar solos noodling, recorded by YOU! I'm looking for material played competently, or really, really awful (even on purpose).

If you're not familiar with shreds, here's a couple of videos that demonstrate the art (yes, these videos are jokes):

So, Happy Puppy Records is planning a release of guitar shreds for next year. It will be available for free download (yes, completely free!) via Creative Commons license. And I need your shreds!

New from the vault is a recording of the Westdale Jr. High Stage Band from 1987. "Wildcat Jazz" was a one-take affair, under the direction of Mary Carlson, recorded live in the studio in Winnipeg, MB.

Although it is in the spirit of the Dondero High School (and numerous other concert band recordings shared online), the tracks here are more traditional stage band repertoire, but there is a 6 minute drum solo! Available for free download.
